Chappe Telegraph Tower

The aerial telegraph of Claude Chappe is the only remains present in the region.

Claude Chappe's air telegraph was an ingenious means of long-distance communication developed in 1794. At the time, a visual signal could be transmitted between Paris and Bayonne in 40 minutes!

At an impressive 23 metres high, it rivals the church tower next door. It is a survivor of the 500 or so towers that were built in France, with around ten remaining today.

Now restored, the Baccon tower has been converted into a museum.

The Baccon Patrimoine association offers guided tours of the Tour Chappe. The tour takes place on the first Sunday of each month, from April to September, from 2pm to 5pm.
