Eglise Saint-Mesmin

The church of Saint-Mesmin, built in the 11th century and restored in the 12th, classified as a Historic Monument in 1862, located within the perimeter of the UNESCO World Heritage site, is situated on the banks of the Loire and is part of the Loire cycle route.

The history of the church of St Mesmin's Chapel is closely linked to that of the abbey of Micy just opposite, on the Loire, whose origin dates back to Clovis. The portal of the church dates from the 11th century and is called in full hanger. The nave comprises 5 bays and ends with a straight span and an apse in cul de four. The choir is covered with a barrel vault of stone. The stained glass windows are modern and tell the story of Micy Abbey from its foundation by Clovis until the death of the last abbot. The church was transformed into a saltpeter depot during the Revolution and then returned to worship in 1802. Major works took place in the 19th century with a new bell tower and the archaeological excavations which enabled the discovery of the so-called "dragon's cave".
