Ménestreau-en-Villette

The name Ménestreau comes from a "small monastery" (in Latin Monestrolium) attested there as early as the year 1000, which later gave rise to the form Ménestreau-en-Sologne and then Ménestreau-en-Villette. It was the chapel of this priory that gave rise to the beautiful church, the jewel in the crown of the commune's heritage. Built in the 13th century and enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries, Notre-Dame church now features 13th-century mural paintings of angel musicians on the choir vault. Its beautiful 16th-century chestnut wood panelled roof frame has been restored.

In the forest, the Saint-Thibault fountain, whose water was said to cure fevers, was rebuilt in 1890 in locally-made bricks and topped by an elegant, highly elaborate bell tower, a real miniature bell tower.
